Web Development
Somehow I managed to find myself doing web development and working with computers over the last ten years. I guess it had a lot to do with being fortunate enough to have a Commodore 64 computer as a very young child and growing up around technology my entire life. I thank my parents for that.
At the moment I am employed by an International Organization as a Web Consultant. I create, edit and administer roughly 50 separate websites scattered around the world and written in seven different locations. No, I don’t update all of them myself; I coordinate the actions of web editors from a central headquarters in Paris, France. It is a really fun job and I enjoy every minute of it.
On the side, I do freelance web development work for friends and small clients. My services include hosting, development, backups and administration. I personally prefer Apache / Linux servers with the basic cPanel / WHM installation that have generally become ubiquitous over the last 15 years. I can work with Windows if needed but if I have a choice, I’ll be using Linux for the web.
Most of the website I develop use out of the box solutions such as Joomla, WordPress, Typo3, SharePoint or other Content Management Systems (CMS) at the clients request. These solutions make life easier for everyone so I prefer to avoid reinventing the wheel.
Occassionally clients ask me if I can write websites fresh out of the box without and CMS and the answer is yes, I can create a website from scratch if needed. The tools of my trade are HTML, CSS, XML, PHP, Javascript and a few other languages that I generally play with. If I need to, I’ll learn a new language just for your project.
I also like to play around with Google API’s. Google Maps is one of my personal favorites. As a result of my shriping hobby, I have learned how to write KML files and work with the Google Maps / Earth API at a moderate level. The other API’s are of course extremely useful and I am eager to learn to use them all.
If you have a web development need, let me know. I generally focus on small clients such as small businesses or individuals seeking a personal website for themselves or a member of their family. My prices are extremely reasonable and I can turn sites around rapidly. Ask about my monthly support prices.
